This pocket barometer dates to the late 19th century and is engraved 'ADIE & WEDDERBURN. EDINBURGH' on the dial. Forming a partnership with his uncle, John Miller, Alexander Adie would go on to make precision barometers and other meteorological instruments as one of Scotlands eminent opticians.

The firm was renamed 'Adie & Son' in 1835, when Alexander's son, Richard, joined the business and until his death in 1881. At that point, the business was sold to Richard's foreman, Thomas Wedderburn, who continued trading under the name 'Adie and Wedderburn' from Hanover Street, Edinburgh.

The brass case is in good condition, with no dents, retaining almost all of its original gilding. The aluminium dial sits beneath a chip-free glass, with the barometric scale ranging from 25 to 31 inches. The bezel rotates with a small guide marker for setting the last measurement.

In full working order and passing the bag pressure test, it weighs just under 100 grams in its case and measures 1¾" (45 mm) in diameter by ¾" (18 mm) in depth.

It is accompanied by its original morrocan leather case, lined with green silk and velvet, which is also in good condition, with a strong hinge and a catch that snaps shut firmly.
